The Dongfanghong brand sedan was a mid-to-high-end compact car developed by the Beijing Automobile Manufacturing Factory (now part of the Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation) in the early 1960s. This model was one of the representative works of the early Chinese automotive industry, and its development marked an important turning point for Beijing's automotive industry from vehicle repair and spare parts manufacturing to complete vehicle manufacturing. The original name of the Dongfanghong brand sedan was the Xinghuo brand Model 760, which was later renamed to the Dongfanghong brand sedan, with its design referring to the Volga sedan produced by the Soviet Union.
In April 1960, the Beijing Automobile Manufacturing Factory completed the first round of trial production, producing three BJ760 Dongfanghong sedan prototypes. After a 25,000-kilometer road test, the results showed that the performance indicators of the Dongfanghong sedan were good, and the chassis performance was reliable. In May 1965, the China National Automotive Industry Corporation organized a national-level product appraisal for the Dongfanghong sedan, which concluded that its main performance and driving reliability basically met the requirements for use and officially passed the national appraisal.
The Dongfanghong brand sedan had a profound impact on the history of product development in Beijing's automotive industry. It was the first product that Beijing's automotive industry developed and produced on its own by introducing foreign technology. From 1959 to 1969, a total of 106 Dongfanghong sedans were trial-produced and manufactured. Although the output was not large, it recorded the development of Beijing's automotive industry, condensed the hard work of Beijing's automotive people in their arduous entrepreneurship, and carried the ideals and pursuits of people at that time.
