Proton (Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Berhad) is the national automotive brand of Malaysia, established in 1983 and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the DRB-HICOM Group. Proton is one of the mature vehicle manufacturers in the Southeast Asia region, with business scope covering the UK, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Australia. Proton has collaborated with Japanese company Mitsubishi and French company Citroën in the field of technology, and in 1996, it successfully acquired the British LOTUS (Lotus Group) International Company, enhancing its strength in automotive design and manufacturing.
Proton has two main production bases in Malaysia. The Shah Alam factory has an annual production capacity of 215,000 units, while the Tanjung Malim factory covers an area of 1,200 hectares and has the potential to be developed into a base with an annual production capacity of 1 million units. In 2016, Proton's market share was 17%, with an annual output of about 80,000 units. Proton's distribution network spans 18 global markets, including various Southeast Asian countries, the UK, Australia, Taiwan, and some parts of the Middle East.
On June 23, 2017, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group and the Malaysian DRB-HICOM Group signed a definitive agreement, with Geely Group acquiring a 49.9% stake in Proton and a 51% stake in the luxury sports car brand Lotus. This move aims to promote Proton's technological innovation capabilities and market competitiveness, achieving the brand's long-term sustainable development and revival.
