SsangYong Motor, the fourth-largest automobile producer in South Korea, was originally founded in 1954 and initially produced jeeps for the U.S. military. The company mainly manufactures four-wheel-drive vehicles but also produces large buses, special vehicles, automotive engines, and spare parts. After acquiring Geohwa Corporation in 1980, SsangYong began manufacturing four-wheel-drive vehicles. In 1988, it was acquired by the SsangYong Group and renamed to its current name. In 1991, it established a technical partnership with Daimler-Benz. In 2004, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) once held 51.33% of SsangYong Motor's shares, becoming its largest shareholder. In 2009, due to financial issues, SsangYong Motor entered bankruptcy proceedings and later ended its cooperation with SAIC. In 2010, the Indian company Mahindra & Mahindra acquired 70% of SsangYong Motor's shares, becoming its new operator.
SsangYong Motor focuses on the mid-to-high-end four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle and sedan markets, with products including the luxury sedan CHAIRMAN, four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles REXTON, KORANDO, MUSSO, and the luxury MPV RODIUS, among others. The brand is highly respected for its unique design and excellent performance, especially as a leading manufacturer in the SUV sector.
